What Are The Criminal Penalties In Cumberland County?
In New Jersey, offenses are divided into two main categories: indictable offenses (called felonies in other states) and disorderly persons offenses (called misdemeanors in many other states). Here is what you can expect in Cumberland County or anywhere in New Jersey.
Within the category of indictable offenses, the penalties depend on the degree of the offense, whether there are aggravating circumstances and other factors. Here are the general penalties for indictable offenses based on degree alone:
First degree: 10 to 30 years in prison (or life imprisonment) and fines of up to $200,000
Second degree: 5 to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $150,000
Third degree: 3 to 5 years in prison and fines of up to $15,000.
Fourth degree: Up to 18 months in prison and fines of up to $10,000
A conviction with aggravating circumstances essentially raises the degree of the offense by one level.
Disorderly persons offenses start with up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500, but more serious ones can land you in jail for six months and cost you a $1,000 fine.
